KRYPTONITE LAUNCHES NOTEBOOK COMPUTER SECURITY LINEUP:
LEADING SECURITY COMPANY TAPS GROWING MARKET SEGMENTCANTON, MASS, NOVEMBER 3, 1999 - Kryptonite Corporation, a leading provider of security protection products, today introduced a full line of portable anti-theft devices for notebook computers.
Kryptonite is a leading provider of security protection products and has been the authority on bicycle and motorcycle security since 1971. The company is using its experience to develop the first complete product line of travel-friendly locks for notebook computers, including an innovative KryptoVault( and the computer industry's first 8mm braided steel locking cables. Braided steel is tougher to cut than the twisted steel cables found in most notebook computer locks today, offering greater theft resistance. Current competitors offer a limited product selection, with twisted steel cables that are only 4mm thick.
"We've taken the strength and technology of the toughest lock on the street and built that into the most protective notebook locks available today. We challenge anyone to find a stronger notebook computer security system," said Kryptonite CEO Gary S. Furst. "Kryptonite's exacting standards for quality, excellence and superior performance are backed by almost 30 years of industry experience, extensive product testing methods, legendary customer services policies, and the industry's most comprehensive warranties and anti-theft guarantees."
Notebook computer theft resulted in over $900 million in insurance claims in 1998 according to the Safeware Loss Study. 303,000 notebook computers were stolen. In addition to the hardware replacement costs, the risk/loss due to notebook thefts is immeasurable, and includes loss of data, proprietary information, productivity time, and security breaches.
"The global market for notebook computers is growing by more than 20% per year. With the recent drop in chip prices, notebook computers are projected to be the primary PC for the majority of users in the coming years," said Kryptonite Computer Security Channel Manager Courtney Celi. "Notebooks are disappearing at work, in dorms, in hotel rooms, and at airports. The time is right for Kryptonite's entry into the notebook security market. People want to protect their investment, and Kryptonite offers a proven track record."
"Kryptonite's product line evolves notebook security from deterrent only to real security," said Celi. "One of these locks makes a great holiday gift for the executive or student who already has everything and wants to keep it."
The company introduced three new locks in a variety of styles unavailable from any other vendor:
- The flagship of the lineup is the KryptoVault, a heavy-duty hardened steel "cage" with ABS bumpers that protect the computer surface, and prevent opening the computer and stealing data. It includes a permanent desk/table anchor to lock down the KryptoVault where consumers use their notebooks most often, and a 7-pin anti-pick lock mechanism with tubular key cylinder. A heavy duty, 8mm braided steel cable is provided to lock a notebook to almost anything when away from the permanent anchor, and easily folds into the handy travel case for travel convenience. The KryptoVault is ideal for office or dorm use, has a lifetime warranty, 24-hour key replacement, and a $500 anti-theft guarantee. Suggested street price: $79.95.
- Kryptonite's Motion Sensor Alarm allows users to secure their notebook computers anyway, anytime, anywhere. It's the only motion sensor alarm on the market that includes a docking station, allowing you to attach the alarm directly to the computer without having to use the cable as a tether, and enables you to hide the alarm under a desk or table for stealth security. It has a 3-digit resettable combination lock mechanism, with three levels of security: two modes of motion sensitivity and a retractable steel cable. Unlike other motion sensor alarms already on the market, the Kryptonite alarm defaults to the highest security setting immediately upon activation. The alarm further deters would-be thieves with it's surround sound 110 dB alarm, a multi-colored flashing LED light, and a retractable steel cable that is 50% thicker than other motion locks currently available. The Kryptonite Motion Sensor alarm comes with a 2-year warranty. Suggested street price: $59.95.
Rounding out the lineup are 5mm and 8mm Key Cable Locks, with braided steel cables and a patent-pending padded computer slot attachment. Both have ergonomically styled key locks with a 7-pin anti-pick cylinder. Both locks have a lifetime warranty, lifetime key registration, and 24-hour key replacement service. The 8mm Mega Key Cable Lock includes a carrying case and storage strap. Suggested street price: $49.95. The 5mm Key Cable Lock includes a storage strap. Suggested street price: $39.95. ![]()
